Is there any cuisine that combines presentation and taste as well as sushi? Calgary’s top sushi houses certainly do just this. Despite a distinct lack of ocean in the vicinity, these establishments turn out fresh, delectable sushi that will have you coming back for more.
One sexy, sumptuous sushi joint, Ki serves high-end sushi in comfort and style. Settle in at the lounge or at an intimate table in the restaurant, and order some of the finest sushi served in Calgary. Options include bento boxes and sushi burgers, but for a top-end sushi experience, try Ki’s signature plates. And absolutely ask for a sake recommendation.
Go Kakuryu! Get ‘em Goeido! Hurray for Hakuho! You may not know the stars of sumo by name, but you can still enjoy televised matches while you savour the namesake cuisine at this busy Fourth Street Southwest restaurant. Order by the piece, roll or cone, or try a bento box or sushi combo with all the punch of Japan’s national sport.
One of a growing number of eateries on the modest Fourth Street Northwest restaurant row, Shigatsu serves expertly executed Japanese tapas dishes as well as an excellent selection of sushi.
In Scotia Centre, Goro + Gun serves the downtown’s best ramen bowls. Naturally, the place is busy at lunchtime, so reservations are recommended. The sushi menu is also a cut above, featuring a tight selection of rolls, nigiri and sashimi. Also try a beef, chicken or mushroom bento-box, all of which include lobster-California roll pieces.
Perhaps surprisingly, there are not many good sushi eateries on the Plus 15. Ramen spot Goro + Gun is one, and Kabuku at the bottom of the Calgary Place escalators is another. Featuring booth, table and sushi-bar seating, this is a pleasant street-corner restaurant in which to enjoy a selection of sashimi, nigiri sushi and various rolls. As well, hot Japanese entrees include miso-marinated cod and Fujiyama Alberta strip loin steak. For celebratory meals, consult Kabuku’s list of chilled and warm sake.
