While the bacon phenomenon is still going strong (long live bacon!), the other parts of the pig are best utilized when cooked low and slow, with some kind of sauce to hold everything together. The second that tender meat hits the plate and falls apart, mouths start watering and a fork frenzy follows. Here is a list of some of the best places in Calgary that serve this slow-cooked wonder on a bun, in breakfast hash and beyond.

Big T's BBQ & Smoke House Co

1
2138 Crowchild Trail NW, Calgary AB T2M 3Y7

A visit to Big T’s BBQ and Smokehouse is a pre-game tradition for many football fans going to watch the Stampeders at McMahon Stadium. Patrons can also enjoy the restaurant’s expertly crafted pulled pork at two additional Big T’s in Deer Ridge and at the Calgary Farmers’ Market. In addition to smokehouse favourites like ribs and brisket, you can fulfill any pulled pork fantasy you have (within reason). Enjoy this tasty barbecue tradition on a slider, with mac ’n’ cheese, on a salad, on a bun or on a platter.

The Palomino Smokehouse

2
109 7 Ave SW, Calgary AB T2P 0W5

Conveniently located right next to the Centre Street CTrain station, Palomino Smokehouse gives you the total pulled pork experience. Enjoy pulled pork on quesadillas, poutine, Caesar salad, mac ’n’ cheese, on a bun or in one of the Palomino’s famous pulled pork spring rolls. Weekend brunch is a must-try; the pulled pork hangover hash and pulled pork eggs Benedict make a great start to any weekend. Grab some friends, and head down to the Palomino Smokehouse for some great live tunes, great food and brews.

Bookers BBQ Grill & Crabshack

3
316 3rd St SE, Calgary AB T2G 2S4

Located in a converted brick warehouse just east of Chinatown, is Booker’s BBQ Grill and Crab Shack, one very legit Louisiana-inspired eatery. Notable eatables include gumbo, 12-hour smoked brisket and St. Louis-style smoked ribs. Earning its Southern street cred, Booker’s also serves an all-you-can-eat, crab-and-ribs spree on Sundays. If you’re specifically craving pulled pork, you’ll find it served a variety of ways; in the Booker’s Burger, as a salad, as a barbecue platter option and on its own. Booker’s slow cooks its pulled pork for 16 hours, so you know you’re getting is the real deal.

Blue Star Diner

4
809 1 Ave NE, Calgary AB T2E 0C2

Barbecue spots aren’t the only eateries with great pulled pork on their menus! At Bridgeland’s busy Blue Star Diner you can enjoy chipotle pulled pork hash made with slow roasted Broek Acres pork leg and shoulder, chipotle lime sauce, sweet potatoes, bell peppers, mushrooms, sweet onions, two soft-poached local farm-fresh eggs, smoked paprika and fresh cilantro. Or, you can order that same great chipotle pulled pork on top of eggs Benedict. Of note, the diner’s ingredients are produced by local farmers.

4th Spot Kitchen & Bar

5
2620 4 St NW, Calgary AB T2M 3A1

4th Spot Kitchen & Bar is a cozy spot nestled in the heart of Mount Pleasant. With vegan and gluten-free options, its inclusive menu also features a fabulous pulled pork poutine made with hand-cut Kennebec fries. Also meaty and delicious, the High on the Hog pulled-pork sandwich is served on a ciabatta bun with apple coleslaw. If you love pizza, this is the place to visit, as 4th Spot offers both a contemporary thin-crust menu and old-school Karouzo-family pizzas.

Pizza Bob's Classic Pie

6
2610 Kensington Rd NW, Calgary AB T2N 3S5

If a pulled pork pizza is exactly what you’re craving, visit Pizza Bob’s. Located in an unassuming strip mall, the pizzeria is no longer a Parkdale neighbourhood secret. More than a mere pizza takeout joint, you can dine in on a Friday night and sing karaoke to your heart’s content, or if you are more of a listener, visit on Saturday nights for live music. Have the barbecue chipotle pulled pork pizza or create your own (plus pulled pork) with the make-your-own pizza option. Note: Pizza Bob’s offers free corkage (a rarity in Calgary).

Diner Deluxe

7
802 Edmonton Trail NE, Calgary AB T2E 3J6

With two locations, Diner Deluxe serves breakfast and lunch fare until 3 pm daily. Using ethically and locally produced ingredients, the diner also does its best to accommodate allergies and dietary restrictions. Enjoy the pulled pork hash breakfast skillet with caramelized onions, mustard, apple relish or, for lunch, the Kansas City pulled pork with bourbon barbecue sauce, slaw, apple spread and red onion on a ciabatta bun. Note: Reservations are accepted at the Aspen Landing location.

Nainas Kitchen

8
121 17 Ave Se, Calgary AB T2G 1H3

This little burger spot located near Crossroads Market was Calgary’s best-kept dining secret until it won repeat YYC Burger Week victories and Food Network’s You Gotta Eat Here introduced the nation to its stuffed burger creations. The burgers are some of the best in the city, but their pulled pork is pretty darn good as well. You can add it, along with many other ingredients, to your mac ’n’ cheese, or have it on a poutine. The ultimate pulled pork experience at Nainas? The Nainalicious Stuffed Burger with pulled pork, aged cheddar, caramelized onions and granny smith apple.

Summertime, and the living is easy… especially when you’re situated on a west-facing patio with a cool mojito in your hand. Traditionally, the classic mojito consists of only five ingredients: white rum, sugar, lime juice, sparkling water and mint, but the Calgary cocktail scene has never been one to keep to tradition. Here are some of Calgary’s best twists on this classic Cuban cocktail. Image credit: iStock.com/id-art.

If you don’t have a baba to make them for you, here are a few places you can find perogies.
